iOS 4 Release Time: Apple Upgrades

So iPhone 3GS and 3rd generation iPod Touch users, today’s a big day for you.  The iOS 4 drops for you today and if you can’t get your hands on an iPhone 4G for some reason (like they’re sold out) then this operating system update should tide you over until your next upgrade.

So when will this update be available?  Honestly, it’s all speculation at this point.  Apple hasn’t said exactly when the iOS 4 will become available, but if it’s anything like the 3.0 release, it’ll be after 1:00 p.m. EST.  Remember though, you must be patient during this time of updates- there are millions of devices who are eligible for the update today so do not be surprised if technical problems run rampant as everyone tries to update simultaneously.

Original iPhone and iPod Touch users are out of luck- your software cannot support the new operating system.  iPhone 3G users will be able to upgrade, but without some of the benefits the OS brings.  iPad users will be able to get the update, but not until September (sorry iPad fans), though a lot of iPad features will now be ported into iOS 4.

Some of the new features are really excellent.  Smart folders will allow you to drag icons onto each other and the iOS will name the folder for you based off what you’re putting in the folder.  iPod playlist creation will become available without having to plug into iTunes and iBooks will become available.  The big one for me is spell checker!

So hold tight folks, your update will come soon.
